John Chervinsky Emerging Photographer Scholarship

Griffin Museum of Photography   /   Deadline: 09/01/16

The John Chervinsky Emerging Photographer Scholarship seeks to recognize, encourage and reward photographers with the potential to create a body of work and sustain solo exhibitions. Awarded annually, the Scholarship provides recipients with a monetary award of $3,000, tuition-free enrollment in Photography Atelier (if awardee not local our on-line class), exhibition of their work at the Griffin Museum of Photography, and a volume from John’s personal library of photography books. The Scholarship seeks to provide a watershed moment in the professional lives of emerging photographers, providing them with the support and encouragement necessary to develop, articulate and grow their own vision for photography.

Location

Winchester, MA

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to photographers who have produced individual works of photography (defined as an art form utilizing light) and/or are in the process of producing bodies of work. Applicants could have participated in a group show but this is not necessary.

We are looking for candidates who are serious about photography, whose potential is emerging and whose photography will benefit from this scholarship. Candidates should not be currently enrolled in a photography degree program. There is no age limit. There are no residency requirements.

Photographers without gallery representation who have exhibited solo in a non-gallery setting (coffee shop, community gallery, etc.) are eligible.

This scholarship is not for well-established photographers. Well-established photographers are individuals in mid-photography-careers and are seen by the public and peers as distinguished in the field of photography and have many accomplishments as a photographer. Please note that an artist who has had MULTIPLE SOLO exhibitions in established galleries, major institutions and major museums or has gallery representation will be considered too accomplished to receive this scholarship.

What constitutes major museums or major institutions? We give the nominators and then the jurors the authority to determine that criteria as their credentials allow them to understand the mechanics and nuance of the photography world.

Considerations

Submissions may be made directly to the Griffin Museum, or by way of one of the scholarship Nominators (see below). Direct submissions can be made by email to the Griffin Museum, and should include: a brief biography; a brief statement of artistic purpose or intent; an artistic CV, if applicable; examples of work in digital format (digital files attached to the application email or links to work on a personal website). Submissions by nomination are made by way of a letter of recommendation from a nominator to the Griffin Museum, after which nominees will be contacted by the Griffin Museum in order to provide additional application material.
