Feb. 26 - April 4, 2007
There are many inspired artists creating brilliant work focused on the human condition. Barry Lopez makes an important point when he says, “Increasingly our culture is shaped by culture and not by landscape, so that our culture, spinning at an ever increasing rate, increasingly refers only to itself.” In our urban modern culture, full of self-reference, perhaps we need more images of nature in our every day lives in order to live more conscientiously in the natural world. I make these images not only to revel in the beauty of my subjects but because I wish to help create a balance - equipoise - with my images of the botanical world.

Work from the ‘Tales of a City – Delhi’ and ‘Homelands’ series by Sunil Gupta
Feb. 16 – March 23, 2007
Opening: Feb. 15
Born in New Delhi in 1953, photographer Sunil Gupta grew up in Montreal before studying photography in New York and establishing himself as an artist and curator in London. His work represents a form of autobiographical photography that is both political and intimate, examining issues of race and homosexuality. It addresses being a gay Indian man in Europe torn between cultures, in a form of "exile," and in a personal struggle with the HIV virus.

Nicky Bird: Question For Seller
Dec. 8, 2006 - Feb. 2, 2007
Nicky Bird is interested in the contemporary status and relevance of ‘found’ photographs. She collects family photographs through the Internet marketplace of eBay. She buys photographs that no-one else bids for, with the connotation that they are unwanted and therefore of no significant value. Bird approaches the seller with a question: How did you come across the photos and what, if anything, do you know about them? Their replies, however brief, are as important as the photographs they are selling. Sometimes they allude to part of a discarded family history, or to everyday life where commonplace photographs of unidentified portraits have long since lost their original meaning. The show aims to explore the commercial expanse of eBay as a context for viewing intimate family photos, and to find out what happens when ‘worthless’ family photographs re-enter the market as art, in the form of an artist’s book; family album.

Gail Albert Halaban: This Stage of Motherhood
Nov. 30, 2006 - Jan. 6, 2007
Gail Albert Halaban photographs communities of mothers. Like an anthropologist, she portrays the private lives of these women as they journey from single life through motherhood. At first glance, they seem to have everything--education, elegance, wealth and family. Yet for these women, such advantages are not without conflict. They must weigh having children with the desire to maintain an identity as it was prior to entering this stage of motherhood. Gail Albert Halaban's satiric yet compassionate images illuminate their struggle to balance their children's need for an emotionally available mother with their own inclination to hold onto the independence of youth.
Although the photographs in This Stage of Motherhood seem to ebe spontaneously captured, they are in fact intricate tableauz created by the artist within the homes of hte women she photographs. This theatricality grants Gail Albert Halaban access to the emotional lives of her subjects.

Constructions: Photographs by Michael Becotte
Nov. 18, 2006 - March 18, 2007
Constructions is sponsored by Mary Lou and Andrew Abruzzese, The Pineville Tavern.
This exhibition features more than a dozen large-scale photographs. Although Becotte made his reputation as a traditional photographer, he has become a master of digital photography in recent years, creating images constructed from family heirlooms as well as random objects retrieved from flea markets, abandoned buildings, and dumps. Over the past ten years Becotte has collected an extensive inventory of props and environmental material. The gathering of these items is a key part of his creative process. He arranges and photographs these objects as a way of exploring his memories and fantasies of family and childhood, and delves into such issues as daydreams, gender, fear, isolation, decay, and mortality.

OUR TOWN TODAY: CONTEMPORARY VISIONS OF EAST HAMPTON BY EAST END PHOTOGRAPHERS
Nov. 18, 2006 - Jan. 7, 2007
To complement the past, Guild Hall Curator Christina Strassfield chose to profile the work of present day East End photographers in the exhibition, Our Town Today: Contemporary Visions of East Hampton. Contemporary visual images of East Hampton today will be exhibited by noted Hampton photographers: Richard Avedon, Ann Chwatsky, Elliott Erwitt, Robert Giard, Ralph Gibson, Gerry Gilberti, Michael Knigin, Doug Kuntz, Fred W. McDarrah, Ken Robbins, Walter Schwab, Kathryn Szoka, Tom Steele and Bruce Weber.
Works will include both black-and-white and color prints depicting a variety of imagery ranging from definitive landscapes and portraits to works with atmospheric details and ethereally composed landscapes. Each artist will be represented by several pieces that capture "a moment in time" documenting

Nate Larson: Stories
Nov. 17 - Dec. 8, 2006
"In a time of insurgent war in the Middle East, global terrorist attacks, weapons of mass destruction, homeland security, and general political unrest, I have become increasingly anxious about the future. An acquaintance in St. Louis traded me an unsual bit of what I thought to be 1950's American memorabilia. Researching it on the internet, the product description reads 'simply remove the towlette from the foil packet, scrub hands thoroughly and wash the contamination away with running water.' The towelettes appear to still be in production today. I wonder if this is what would save us."

Charles H. Traub:
Indecent Exposure. Photographs from 1980 - 1982
Nov. 16, 2006 - Jan. 6, 2007
Daniel Cooney Fine Art is proud to present an exhibition of vintage color photographs from 1980 – 1982 by Charles H. Traub (b. 1945). This series, early color work of the photographer, began with an ad that was placed in a local paper calling for nude models. Those who responded, mostly women, did so with a variety of motives, from the need for money to exhibitionism. Traub was interested in making images that were not typical of the stylized photographic female nudes of the time. His models reveal a variety of emotions and project as many attitudes.

Douglas McCulloh, Jacque Garnier: On the Beach: Chance Portraits From Two Shores
Nov. 15, 2006 - Jan. 19, 2007
"The ocean's edge is a place of freedom and desire, a place to stare and to strut, to see and to be seen. Beaches are half display, half voyeurism. This is the precise terrain of photography--one side posing, the other looking. Cameras belong on the beach." --Douglas McCulloh
"The portraits of On Beach are fast, aggressive, and chaotic. Through rigorous framing, energetic cropping and spontaneous interaction, an almost surrealistic dialogue commences..the ideal moment with these beach portraits arises from a spontaneous ballet between teh models who are freee to do as they wish and the photographer who is looking of a moment of magic." --Jacques Garnier
"The beach eliminates conceits, concealment, and clothing. It removes everyday roles, stances and status. The beach is a set of subtractions. When you cross onto the sand you become a little naked." --Douglas McCulloh
The real life characters photographed for this exhibition reveal the rich diversity and color of the beach as a social and cultural pageant. Florida's beaches are a magnet, not only for the local population, but for the millions who visit Florida each year. This exhibition features images made of the last 2 years on Florida's beaches, combined with a campanion series made on the beaches of Southern California.
On the Beach rises from a powerful straighforward idea--go to beaches and capture a chance sample of beachgoers. The idea of sampling drives the project. In the words of artist Sol LeWitt, "the idea becomes a machine that makes the art."

This exhibit examines the work of five contemporary artists - Ruth Adams, Frank Burton, Alison Carey, Tarrah Krajnak and T. A. Trombley. Each uses photographic technologies to produce some degree of meaning in their work. All of the artists included push the bounds of technology, and share a belief that photography's meaning is both hidden within and revealed by the technologies they employ to create their art.

Chuck Close, Sally Mann, Christopher Bucklow, Adam Fuss, Jerry Spagnoli among others: Out of Darkness: THe Contemporary Revivial of Early Photography
10/26/06 - 12/7/06
While digital photography technology improves at an exponential rate, a group of well-known contemporary artists are looking to the techniques of photography’s dawn for inspiration. Out of Darkness: The Contemporary Revival of Early Photography, brings together the work of 11 cutting edge photographers who are working with archaic media—Chuck Close, Sally Mann, Jerry Spangnoli and Abelardo Morell among them. The evolution of digital technology is the latest development in an ever-advancing continuum of photographic processes that began over a hundred and fifty years ago. Contemporary photographers now have access to nearly instantaneous image capture and reproduction. The tools and speed of digital photography reflect a culture that demands immediate gratification and instant access.

October 17, 2006 - November 18, 2006
Binary Articulations is a celebration of contemporary artists that have mastered, transformed and turned to their advantage the influence of technology on their inner visions. This exhibition is about the digital medium, but it is also an exhibition that explores the boundaries or binaries of the artists involved. The similarities in process, medium or format help to accentuate the identity, ideas and background. It can be thought of an interaction of artists work. The exhibition features landscapes, collage, and "Scanner Obscura" images, among the 80-plus images represented.
Binary Articulation has recently exhibited at George A. Spiva Center for the Arts (Joplin, MO) and Pittsburg State University (Pittsburg, KS). To enquire about bring Binary Articulations to your venue or becoming an exhibition sponsor, please contact Rhona Shand (curator).

Tanya Marcuse: Undergarments and Armour
Oct. 13 - Dec. 1, 2006
With the support of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Tanya Marcuse has travelled to archives and museums in the U.S. and England photographing undergarments, armor, and the museum forms that populate the storerooms—objects like breastplates, helmets, corsets, bustles, mannequins and dress forms. The earliest objects date to the 14th century while no object is dated past 1900, ruling out the possibility of a living owner. Marcuse sees these garments and suits of armor as sculptures of the body that, like a carapace, outlast their wearers. These personal effects adorned, constricted and protected the body all at once. Now they are archived as artistic and cultural artefacts, shells of the bodies that once inhabited them. The project extends her long-standing interest in sculpture and the body, presence and absence.

Arlene Gottfried: Midnight
Oct. 7 - Nov. 18, 2006
During the summer of 1984, American artist Arlene Gottfried met Midnight, a man who became her close confidant and the subject of her photography. Gottfried went on to document the next two decades of Midnight’s life and it is this visual journey of simple yet gripping portraits that forms Midnight, the exhibition, which will be showing at BCA Gallery from 7 October 2006.
At first, Midnight was a handsome and charming companion who danced and performed at nightclubs. But as time passed he began to behave in an increasingly bizarre fashion. Soon after being diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, years of auditory hallucinations, self-mutilation, and other extreme behaviour followed. Despite the ongoing cycles of hospitalisation, jail, counselling, heavy medication, and sudden disappearances, Gottfried stood by her friend. The exhibition is produced in collaboration with Autograph ABP http://www.autograph-abp.co.uk

Peter Moriarty: Cherished Possessions
Oct. 3 - Nov. 4, 2006
In this series of black and white prints, Moriarty portrays the relationship of people to their cherished possessions and inclueds a statement of their innermost feelings. For example, Jacob, one of Moriarty's subjects, explains: "My Paddington bear (Baby) is the only pocession of mine that evolves by its loving disintegration. The physical breakdown (the loss of an eye, a larger tear in the fabric), serves as evidence of countless comfortable nights spent beside me." Moriarty says that Paul Caponigro, after viewing these prints, called them, "the keepers of caring."

Kim Ellen Kauffman: Collaborations
October 1, 2006 - November 27, 2006
Over the years I have shared my love of plants and experience of gardening through photography. The work I’ve shown in past Mackerel Sky shows, titled Florilegium, has been the culmination of that expression. The cameraless, filmless collage process I use allows me to build photographic compositions out of disparate parts, not unlike building a garden scene from many plants. I have not been limited by “botanical correctness”, feeling free to combine plants that might not grow together, altering scale or color if the composition called for it, creating a new reality.

This exhibition presents work by three emerging talents from the Midwestern United States: Kelli Connell, Justin Newhall, and Brian Ulrich. These artists have been selected to inaugurate The Midwest Photographers Publication Project (MP3) series, published by the museum in collaboration with the Aperature Foundation. Each of the artists is profiled in an individual volume containing images selected from their most recent work with essays by Rod Slemmons, Karen Irvine, and Natasha Egan. Sept. 21, 2006–Jan. 8, 2007
New Photography is the annual fall showcase of significant recent work in contemporary photography. This year’s exhibition features three artists from Europe. The Berlin-based British artist Jonathan Monk contributes a series of tongue-in-cheek photographs and two slide projections that play with the idea of falsified documents, interweaving moments of personal history with art history. German artist Barbara Probst experiments with the temporality and point of view of the shot/counter-shot technique of film by presenting multiple photographs of one scene shot simultaneously with several cameras via a radio-controlled release system. The Swiss artist Jules Spinatsch presents a selection of works from his major photographic project Temporary Discomfort—making its New York premiere in this exhibition—which documents the towns of Genoa, Davos, New York City, and Geneva/Evian during the 2001 and 2003 World Economic Forums.

Tripping the Light Fantastic: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography
From Sept. 20 through Oct. 10, Agora gallery presents Tripping the Light Fantastic in SoHo, 415 West Broadway. The multi-faceted styles and interests of contemporary photographers are on display at Agora Gallery’s annual Tripping the Light Fantastic. The variety of natural forms and soulful vistas captivate the interests of photographers Terry Amburgery, Enrico Cortesano, and Randall Harris; their works often feature the dance of light and reflection.
Beth Parin’s works are visually seductive, incorporating Ansel Adams-style vistas coupled with Surrealist intrigue. Australian photographer, Rebecca Devereaux creates iridescent portraits of plants and flowers by zooming in to remove all traces of context in a celebration of the complexity and elegance of natural forms.
Mirko Angeli and Erique Crusellas Prieto focus their efforts on urban themes and consumer culture, ranging stylistically from the mysterious to the surreal. The most painterly photographer in the exhibition is Christian Egger, his images are starkly reminiscent of the Abstract Expressionists. Egger’s photos are created by working the surface of the photographs with a variety of tools, his favorite being a surgeon’s scalpel.
The photography of T.R. Bishop and Tommaso Leto both center around the inescapable effects of time on ordinary materials. For both artists meaning is imbued solely by the materials being photographed, a stunning visual selection of the struggle between construction and destruction. Nicole Loverso photographs a variety of subjects, some natural and some man-made. By reducing her concept to its most essential elements Loverso allows for multi-layered readings and a meaningful interaction between the audience and her work.

Sept. 18 - Oct. 29, 2006
The Cultural Revolution in China (1966-76) remains one of the most complicated political movements of the twentieth century. Almost no visual documentation of the period exsist; that which does is influenced by govenment control over media, arts, and cultural institutions. Li Zhensheng (b. 1940), a photojournalist living in the northern Chinese province of Heilongjiang during the revolution, managed, at great personal risk, to hide and preserve more than 30,000 negatives during the ten-year period. He made images as a party-approved photographer for hte Heilongjiang Daily. This body of work is the only know exisiting photographic documentation of the Cultural Revolution.

Wendel A. White: Pictures from a New World. An African American Village in Israel
Sept. 18 - Oct. 14, 2006
The photographs in this project were made in the "Village of Peace" community in Dimona, Israel. The community was established nearly 40 years ago by the African Hebrew Israelites, a group of black Americans, mostly from the Chicago area. They left the U.S. in the late 1960's, lived in Liberia and finally settled in Israel's Negev desert. The images in this portfolio depict various aspects of life in the community; portraits, business, education, architecture, healthcare, music, and play. This project is an extension of White's earlier works including "Small Towns, Black Lives: African American Communities in Southern New Jersey" and "Schools for the Colored: Up-South, Between the Mississippi River and the Atlantic Ocean."

Opening Reception: Friday, Oct. 15, 5-7:30pm
Artist Gallery Talk: Wednesday, Oct. 11, noon
Annette Fournet's haunting photographs of Eastern and Central Europe's countryside exemplify the Czech litost. While this world has no exact translation, Czech author Milan Kundera defines litost loosely as "a feeling as infinite as an open accordion, a feeling that is the synthesis of many others: grief, sympathy, remorse, and an indefinable longing." Fournet captures the stark beauty of the region in the imperfectly made scarecrows, simply constructed with sticks, twine, and other gathered materials. The landscape is presented in a hazy monochrome. Fourteen images displayed online at www.photomediacenter.org demonstrate that change is inevitable, things transform or decay, are lost, and are swept away by death and evolution.

Tropicalisms
September 14, 2006 - January 14, 2007
This exhibition asks fundamental questions about the tropical landscape and how contemporary artists have used it in their work, either to subvert common (mis)conceptions or simply quote this scenery as part of an everyday experience. Exploring the history of the colonization of the New World as a land of savage and unexpected beauty, this exhibition rejects utopian visions of the tropical landscape that continue to mark their presence in contemporary tourist literature. Instead, artists explore the difficulties inherent in the development of this problematic reading of the tropical landscape. Featured artists are: Manuel Acevedo, Matías Aguilar, Elia Alba, Adriana Arenas, William Armbruster, Nicole Awai, T | |
