Dec. 6 - 31, 2005
For something completely different, the Soho Photo
Gallery will present "Portraits, Portraits, Portraits: The
Members' Show." For the first time, the entire main gallery
downstairs will be taken over by series of portraits taken by
15 members of the Gallery. Each photographer will exhibit approximately
four images and possibly give Cartier-Bresson's famous dictum,
"You must somehow position the camera between [the subject's]
shirt and his skin" new meaning as the photographers display
their varied approaches to the fine art of portraiture.

| Pinhole Visions: Photographs by
Tricia Rosenkilde
Dec. 6 - 31, 2005
This show will feature the sepia toned pinhole images
of landscapes, gardens, and chateaux that Rosenkilde took while
living in Paris. She explains that her "cameras" are
actually covered food tins that she loads with film; the lens
is a needle-sized hole covered with black tape that acts as a
shutter. . . . She says, "Pinhole photography requires patience,
imagination and the willingness to be surprised by the results."

Group Portrait
Nov. 18, 2005-Jan. 22, 2006
The PRC is pleased to present a group show that
highlights emerging and mid-career photographers who engage and
challenge the genre of narrative and group portraiture. As we
approach the holidays, when family and friends gather, it seems
apt to consider the group portrait—a genre that traverses
the diverse fields of fine art, commercial, and vernacular photography
as well as painting. Featured artists include Julie Blackmon (Springfield,
MO), Ben Gest (Chicago, IL), Jessica Todd Harper (Wynnewood, PA),
Amy Montali (Northampton, MA), and Sage Sohier (Brookline, MA).

| Farah Mahbub: Ethereal Ether Echoes
Nov. 10 - 29, 2005
This exhibition showcases works of analogue photography;
Travelogues of Pakistan, India and Turkey, followed by
digital photo montages of various landscapes and still-life.
On exhibition are emerging photo media arts. A single part of
the gallery takes up a traditional photographic genre, but extends
and subtly shifts it into compelling new realms of digital art.
Ultimately the images within their individual environment reveal
the essence of their nature. Larger images engage with complex
concepts and the smaller tend to tone down to a simply series
of travelogue images.
One of the most persuasive aspects of the digital art in the show
is how ‘subjects’ are able to unnerve and seduce us
at the same time. Ultimately the images within their individual
environment reveal the essence of their nature. The artist here
tackles notions of ‘landscape’, ‘still life’
and ‘architecture’ photography within a diverse range
of approaches and vibrant aesthetics.

Nov. 5, 2005 - Feb. 5, 2006
Active from the mid-to-late 1920s until his premature
death in 1944, Luke Swank was one of the pioneers of modernism
in photography. At the height of his career, his work was included
in several prestigious exhibitions in New York, Pittsburgh, Los
Angeles, and San Francisco, and received praise from critics,
art historians, and renowned photographers. Widely recognizd during
his lifetime, Swank has gone unnoticed since his death.

When Two or More are Gathered Together
November 4 - December 3, 2005
Neal's photographs include the serious and the silly.
A group of Sabrett hot dog vendors gather for a portrait in front
of their headquarters in New York City. Some vendors stand behind
their carts in the foreground. Each person has a telltale appearance
of years of street vending. The Lloyd Rod and Gun Club features
a group of men brandishing their shotguns, ready for a hunt with
friends. And then there is a group portrait of senior veterans
inside their dingy VFW Post saluting the flag. You get the impression
these soldiers are empathetic friends that often gather to pay
tribute to their country and trade war stories. These photographs
illustrate the profound significance of groups in our culture.

the fall of the Taliban. The exhibition is a unique opportunity
to see Afghan society through Afghan eyes, as the country seeks

| Where's
Joe? The Ghost of Bethlehem Steel Part lll
Oct. 7, 2005 to Feb. 5, 2005
Part three of the series is being shown at Lehigh’s,
Girdler Gallery from Oct. 8 to Feb. 4, 2006 under the direction
of Ricardo Viera Director / Curator. The work is part of the permanent
collection of Lehigh University.
I wanted to explore this modern day archeological
site. During my initial visit, I thought of my feelings and emotions
while visiting Mesa Verde years earlier. Are the walls and structures
of Bethlehem Steel, our cliff dwellings, cave paintings or canyon
walls? Are these grounds in some ways sacred? What has become
of those who were here? At times, I could sense the presence of
the steelworkers who had passed through the buildings. When a
train passed by, it felt as though the machinery was moving and
alive. This sense of mystery and questioning is what I hope to
convey through these photographs.

The Allen Sisters: Pictorial Photographs of
New England, 1885 - 1920 |
09/17/05 - 01/08/06 |
| The
exhibition, The Allen Sisters: Pictorial Photographs of New
England, 1885 - 1920, on view at the Florence Griswold Museum
from September 17, 2005 through January 8, 2006, is a tribute
to the sisters' artistic legacy, which has been lost from view
for most of a century. Although few people today have seen the
depth and breadth of their work, in 1901 the Allen sisters were
praised as being among “The Foremost Women Photographers
in America.” Organized by Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield,
Massachusetts, the fifty platinum prints offer idealized photographs
of country scenes, figure and child studies, and landscapes of
New England, California, and Great Britain. To complement the
photographs, works drawn from the Florence Griswold Museum’s
expansive collection of Tonalist and Impressionist paintings will
also be on view. The visual and thematic similarities between
these works provide a provocative new context in which to consider
the Allens' haunting compositions. The installation at the Florence
Griswold Museum is generously sponsored by Xerox.

| Alex Webb: Crossings - Photographs
from the US-Mexico Border
Sept. 16 - Dec. 11, 2005
The United States-Mexico border is a narrow strip
where cultural differences between the two lands are blurred and
an atmosphere of transience and crossings dominates. For the last
twenty-five years Alex Webb has documented this rich, diverse
and contentious border region. In this exhibition his complex
and poignant images capture the humor, pathos, paradox, and tragedy
of life in a place of perpetual flux, transience and volatility.
Ron Haviv: Blood and Honey. A Balkan War Journal
Sept. 16 - Dec. 11, 2005
Many thousands of photographs emerged from the war
in Yugoslavia. The Civil War and ethnic turmoil in that country
during the 1990’s are captured in Ron Haviv’s compelling
and unique record of inhumanity in the heart of Europe. Blood
and Honey shows us not only the major news events like the “ethnic-cleansing”,
Serbian concentration camps, para-military atrocities and the
destruction of ancient cities and culture, but he also gives us
a glimpse into the lives of the ordinary people swept up in the
chaos.

Saga: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Photographs
1970-2005
Sept. 10, 2005 - Jan. 8, 2006
Exhibition Opening: Friday, September 9 from 6-9 pm
Arno Minkkinen is an internationally known Finnish-American photographer
who has been photographing his nude body in the landscape and
in interior settings since the early 1970s. The resulting unmanipulated
photographs are astonishing in the way Minkkinen maneuvers his
body so that it echoes the land formation or appears in surreal
juxtaposition to it. He teaches at the University of Massachusetts
at Lowell . This traveling mid-career retrospective is co-curated
by A.D. Coleman, well-known photography critic, and Todd Brandow,
founder of the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Paris.
They have selected 120 prints representing Minkkinenís
career from 1970 to the present, including images taken in many
parts of the world. Saga is accompanied by an illustrated exhibition
catalogue. The DeCordova site coordinator is Director of Curatorial
Affairs Rachel Rosenfield Lafo.

Liminal Britain: Richard Billingham, John Darwell, Dinu Li, Jason
Oddy, Ingrid Pollard & Trish Simonite
Aug. 31 - Oct. 8, 2005
Opening Events, Wednesday, September 7th 2005:
Lecture by artist Richard Billingham, Art 223, 4 p.m.
Reception for the artist, Art Gallery Foyer, 5 – 7 p.m.
Liminal Britain brings together the work of six
contemporary British photographers whose works examine spaces
where notions of memory, identity and place intersect in subtle
and indefinable ways. Whether depicting the rural countryside,
domestic interiors or unremarkable urban views, these evocative
photographs expose thresholds of psychological experience that
involve an engagement with the past. These are spaces marked by
time, where the present is tangibly or metaphorically pierced
by the past. Ultimately what connects the work of these photographers
is a desire to understand their surroundings as psychological
as well as physical spaces.
Liminal Britain is organized by Sara-Jayne Parsons,
UNT Art Gallery, and is supported by the UNT School of Visual
Arts Visiting Artist and Scholar Committee, the Texas Commission
on the Arts and the British Council.

Scott David Laird: Two Please ... |
08/20 - 09/10/05 |
|
two please…, photographs by Scott David Laird, sound by
Joe Tunis
Aug. 20th through Sept. 10, 2005
Artist Reception: Saturday, September 10, 7-9 pm
two please… features a series of
color photographs that examine the dating process. The photographs
portray different moments along the typical dating timeline; but
Laird extracts certain pivotal aspects and objects related to
events like going to dinner. The images isolate particular objects
and moments of the dinner date and illustrate how a chair can
exhibit a desire for pleasure, the awkwardness of getting ready,
or the emotional rawness of the “morning after.” Laird
places objects outside of their usual context emphasizing the
fragility and beauty of this social interaction that usually go
unnoticed. Laird again collaborates with musician Joe Tunis who
produces a rather funny, sardonic, yet haunting sound installation
using a bistro table that incorporates various noises associated
with dating and restaurants. Together, the images and installation
create an environment that either leaves you wanting more, or
feeling that you can’t wait to get out of the car.

Chan Chao and Ken Ashton
July 15 - Oct. 1, 2005
Strand On Volta presents recent work by Ken D. Ashton,
Chan T. Chao, and E. Brady Robinson. All colleagues and associates
of the Corcoran Museum, these artists for different reasons found
themselves near the same location in Italy. This work is a product
of that sojourn, representing their recent interests in landscape,
portraiture and still life. Each artist quietly sidesteps the
spectacular economic engine of tourism establishing a different
rate of exchange.

Liséa Lyons: Haunted |
07/02 - 08/21/05 |
| Haunted
a solo exhibition of work by Liséa Lyons (New York, NY)
Liséa Lyons’ lush color photographs
centering around her daughter reveal a complex and evocative narrative
of a parent-child relationship. Lyons’ project, which began
with the impulse to document her daughter’s growth, are
ripe with anticipation, memory, and fear.
Lyons images avoid traditional narrative strategies; rather, they
focus on the in-between moments of her daughter’s daily
routine, and domestic details that are dense with literary suggestion.
In one image, a costumed girl perched on the side of her bed at
the edge of the photograph appears to float off into an imaginary
ballroom. The work featured in Haunted opens new possibilities
in photographic story telling, and indicates that photography
still has much to explore.

PLAY gathers 8 artists whose diverse photography
and video work offers, at first glance, playful foolery, yet further
reveals investigations into social and personal concerns, though
in some cases, were created just for the fun of it. Whether relating
to "play" as a point of departure or exploration, the
work in CPW's summer exhibition, PLAY, reminds us of the immeasurable
value and the potential for discovery that resides in "playing".
